Interview with Death Appeal

Death Industrial from Melbourne, Australia. Formed by L.M. who is also in bands such as Contaminated and Derailment, DEATH APPEAL has recently unleashed debut album entitled "Precipice", officially on September 12, 2024. FNJ has spoken with L.M. for more details.

Hello dude. Here's an interview by Hidden Sounds - a blog/zine based in Malaysia. Please introduce more about yourself.

Hello! L.M. here, sole member of DEATH APPEAL. Thank you for providing a space for me to spin some bullshit. I am dumbfounded that you've even found DEATH APPEAL, since it is a new project with absolutely zero promotion! I also currently play in CONTAMINATED (dark death metal), G.B.S. (goregrind/noisecore) and DERAILMENT (sludge, but with tinges of industrial and death metal).

When did you first know about Death Industrial, and what sort of bands / artists that hugely influenced you to explore this genre?

A long time ago, probably 15 years ago or so, was when I first heard of Cold Meat Industry and BRIGHTER DEATH NOW. However, more recently I revisited BDN, MEGAPTERA, ANENZEPHALIA, LUSTMORD and the like, and found myself hearing a lot more in their records than I remembered. This then turned into a full-blown obsession, which resulted in me starting a project of my own. All of the above have influenced DEATH APPEAL, particularly early BDN ("Slaughterhouse Invitation", "Pain in Progress", "Great Death" series, "Necrose Evangelicum").

Tell us about the history and background of Death Appeal?

I started messing around with noise loops and clumsily-constructed spacey dark ambient in 2008-09. I briefly explored more industrial sounds around then, but lacked the know-how and patience to figure out how to articulate what was in my head. Fast-forward many years and I've collected synths, drum machines, mixers, pedals, and so what originally started as an afternoon just having fun quickly became a "proper" project.

What aspects are emphasized in the creative processes for Death Appeal?

Deliberately measured use of "composed" noise textures to create an oppressive, pitch-black atmosphere; hard, militaristic sonic characteristics; no bullshit lazy noise for the sake of it.

What about the messages did you deliver through your works?

There is no particular message that I am trying to communicate with this project. If the listener feels tense, anxious and paranoid while listening to DEATH APPEAL, then that is mission accomplished!

Explain more anything about your debut release, "Precipice"?

No VSTs of any kind were used on the recording.  All sounds bar samples were created organically with a couple of cheap analog synths, hardware drum machine and some field recordings.

What will be next from Death Appeal in the near future?

Next up is a track for the third Headsplit Records (killer US extreme metal label) compilation CD, who are also putting out a cassette version of "Precipice". I'm working on a few more tracks right now that might make up an EP or the basis for a full length, but we'll see what comes of them. Right now they vary between harsh dark ambience and manipulated-machine-sounds scrap metal industrial.

Do you know more about the experimental / electronic music scene in Melbourne, Australia?

I have not been directly involved with the scene here in Melbourne, but there is a long history of experimental noise and the like. Make It Up Club has been running for 20+ years, which is a weekly improv night. Some current favourites from around town include SPASMOSLOP and DIURETICS.

Do you plan for any live performances?

Not anytime soon - I'm just not sure how it'd work, or make for an engaging show in any way, as how I construct songs for DEATH APPEAL is mostly based on layering up individually recorded parts that move pretty slowly. I'll never say never but it's not an option currently.

Well, thanks for the answers. Last words please.

The CD version of "Precipice" is out now and is available at my Bandcamp, and Headsplit Records will soon release a cassette version of it. Cheers!
